FPTP vs AV voting systems compared

BBC Radio5 Live today conducted a “Mock Interview” to compare the First Past The Post (FPTP) and the Alternative Vote (AV) system. I believe this is the first example of the FPTP and AV compared side by side using real voters. This two hour hustings, vote and conclusions hosted by Victoria Derbyshire. You can listen to the whole show (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00ztf0h). People were asked to listen to the candidates then vote, firstly using FPTP then AV.

In both systems Labour took this fictional seat.

However, under AV, the Green Party Candidate ………. came second! (With 41.7% of the vote)

Imagine…… a 4 party state… with each political party HAVING to tackle issues such as:-

  • Environmental
  • Immigration
  • Civil Liberties

This can only be a good thing for democracy. Vote YES to AV.

First Past the Post result

  1. Labour 39.0%
  2. Conserv 22.7%
  3. Green 16.9%
  4. LibDem 15.6%

Green Party? Second? Don’t make me laugh. That would never happen in a proper UK AV election. That Radio 5 show didn’t have a proportional sample of the UK.
