Here I describe the rational for roughly maintaining the 2010 boundary of Preston constituency as part of the Boundary Commission’s consultation into the 1st draft of the boundary review following the Parliamentary Constituencies Act 2011.
Both of these solutions “add up” but I propose moving Sharoe Green and Greyfriars northward to prevent a knock-on effect to Lancaster as the proposed changes would mean the urbanised areas of Lancaster would vote with the more rural wards of Pressall & Ribchester.
Whilst obviously that Sharoe Green & Greyfriars geographically are obviously more suited to Preston, the electorate totals just do not add up for the neighbouring constituencies, and given that these wards generally vote Conservative and that Fishwick & Lea return different councillors that this balance in electorate would be more favourable.
Inclusion of wards to the Preston “core” wards:-
- Lea & Fishwick = 77660
- Sharoe Green & Greyfriars = 79733
Total number of electors = 77660
